Our concern is for the safety of race participants, staff and volunteers, and providing them an exceptional experience.Due to current river levels and the predicted weather, the Grand River Canoe & Kayak Race has been canceled for Saturday, May 4. This is a difficult decision. There will be no other postponement date. Our highest priority is to run a safe race for everyone involved. We thank everyone for their support and we hope to do it again next year.
Paddlers from around the midwest meet at the Ashtabula Metroparks Harpersfield Bridge Covered Bridge Metropark every spring to compete in an 8½-mile canoe and kayak race on the wild and scenic Grand River to Hidden Valley Park south entrance (Madison). Some are former national champions, some are paddling this stretch for the first time, all experience the river like it was meant to be experienced, in its wild and scenic state. Racers come back year after year and pass racing down to the next generation. This race has become a family tradition for many in Lake County and beyond.
The Grand River Canoe and Kayak Race, presented by Ganley Subaru East & CoreLife Eatery and sponsored by L. L. Bean, has been rescheduled to 9 am May 4. Boats depart between 9 and 10 am. This race is known for its “maddest hat” contest, in honor of the canoe club with the same name that started the race in 1964.
